The history on this drive: It is a 2 TB Seagate external hard drive that the Mac store reformatted for me to use with Time Machine. I had a problem right after I bought my Mac and we did this to backup my machine and literally restore it to a new machine. Since then, I have used it with time machine and now want to re-partition it so I can store backups of additional files to the other partition (once it is created). The current single partition is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Any ideas how to address this issue?

I would prefer not to have to erase the disk as part of the process (if possible).

Has anyone else here had a hard time with the new Disk Utility app? It's impossible for me to resize, delete or erase partitions from my external drive using the new Disk Utility app. When I try to resize the app complains I can't because journaling is not enabled on the drive (which it definitely is, actually). The message gives me instructions on how to enable the feature under the 'file' menu, but it's unavailable. When I try to erase the partition I constantly get the message 'Media Kit reports not enough space on device for requested operation.' The '-' button to delete the partition is unavailable as well. Luckily I had a USB stick laying around with Yosemite's installer on it and I used that to boot into the 10.10 recovery disk.

The old version of Disk Utility there has NO ISSUES whatsoever deleting the partition and giving me back the remaining space. (something that the new pie-chart graph also can't reliably do it seems) Besides me just needing to vent my frustration about this, is there anyone who has has the same problems? And if so, do any of you know a better solution or are we (once again) depending on Apple to see if and when they decide to clean-up after their fuck-ups?

This weekend a raid array failed in my 2009 Mac Pro. No worries, I have backups, just need to replace a disk and rebuild. After replacing the disk I find that the new Disk Utility no longer has he ability to create, rebuild, or do ANYTHING with raid arrays whatsoever. Luckily it's not a huge deal to do this via terminal, but still.

I don't understand why they had to remove a feature that worked perfectly well before. I guess they figure none of their products support raid since they redesigned he Mac Pro, so there's no reason to maintain the feature.
