One of my favourite software utilities is OnyX for Mac. It’s a multifunctional tool that allows you to verify startup disk, repair it, verify/repair permissions, clean caches, logs, run system maintenance, configure hidden parameters and more. Best of all, its free!

Using OnyX for Mac I recommend OnyX because it provides an easy way for the average user to clear out unnecessary files from their Mac. It also provides an interface to turn on/off hidden settings that Apple don’t let you change.

By default, Mac OS X does a pretty good job of keeping itself cleansed of unnecessary files. But if you’re a heavy user, or your Mac is old, it might be a good idea to run OnyX to get rid of all the old caches, logs, etc. Once OnyX has performed a SMART test and verified your startup disk, you can enter your login password and you’ll be presented with the main window. I’m not a fan of graphic effects, so I keep them turned off. There isn’t really any benefit to doing this, it’s just personal preference.
