So I tried downloading & installing Office 2016 (using my Office 365 subscription) today on my MacBook Air running El Capitan (10.11.3), and after what appeared to be a successful installation, Word & Excel wouldn't even launch!

(For now I've gone ahead and deleted Office 2016 and am back to using Office 2011). I think I've sorted it out. I'm also running VMWare Fusion (8.1.0) on this Mac, and it has settings that put Windows app launchers in the Mac's Application folder, and seems to permit launching Windows apps from the Mac side and vice-versa. I turned all those features off (since I don't use them anyway), which removed some possibly-conflictingly-named apps from my Mac Applications folder. Then I reinstalled Office 2016 (Mac). They still wouldn't launch correctly after installation, but after a reboot of the computer they seem to launch and run OK (at least I was able to run Word & Excel for a few seconds each without a problem). What version of Word are you using?

This being Microsoft ( ), have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling Office 2011 from your original installer? And, then be sure to try the Help menu/Check for Updates to make sure that your Office is fully up-to-date. And, now I see that I have wasted your time. The split view function, provided by OS X, is not supported by Office 2011 apps. (I was thinking the 'split' function within Office, which is not the same thing. My mistake ) It's Microsoft's problem.
Maybe it is related to the fact that Office 2011 apps are still 32-bit (?) Nothing you can do, except to use Office 2016 apps (or ignore split view mode when using Office 2011 apps).
